The sixth installment in Rockstar’s infamous Grand Theft Auto series is one of the best yet, tweaking and refining the formula that made Grand Theft Auto 3 such a hit. GTA: Vice City is a free-to-play, open-world single-player experience that puts players in the blue jeans and Hawaiian shirts of Tommy Vercetti as he puts his stamp on a criminal. The city is yours: he still doesn’t know that 15 years in prison is a long time, and for an ambitious crime lord like Vercetti, that’s enough to toughen you up. Voiced by the charming and intense Ray Liotta, Vercetti is the perfect protagonist for a GTA game: resourceful and ruthless, he becomes the conduit through which the player becomes first and center of the action in a world that promises freedom and peace. Total control. GTA: Vice City delivers on that promise in a city that oscillates between gratuitous violence and humor, the latter coming mostly from a memorable cast whose personalities make Vercetti’s pinball fun. They are secondary characters such as Diaz, Ken Paul or the corrupt lawyer Ken Rosenberg. GTA 6’s plot is more nuanced than its predecessor, but still simple in its essence: get revenge, take the cash, and embrace the dynamic world of free roaming. The city itself is one of the game’s main characters and is fully realized with its own living, breathing personality that cannot be ignored. Vice City takes place before the events of GTA 3 and evolves from the hostile old urban environment to a bright and colorful coastal city inspired by Miami. This happy, successful atmosphere is at odds with the seedy, seedy underworld that drives the story. Sadly, the ship’s controls haven’t improved either, and missions like Diaz’s Yacht are so bad that it’s often best to take the long way just to avoid bumping into GTA 6 textures that are vague. and uninspired by today’s standards, and the LOD suffers above. It’s a good thing the voice is so good, because the human models are low res and can barely be heard. On the other hand, it makes it easier to run the game on mobile devices or older hardware. Despite its large size, Vice City works great on iPhone. Lay down your guns, get the cannoliGTA 6 takes the best bits of GTA 3 and polishes them to a mirror-like shine, delivering around 30 hours of straight-through gameplay. Playing around with previous games in the franchise, GTA 6 also features an in-depth money laundering system tied to real estate. This extra aspect solves one of the biggest (and stupidest) problems in GTA 3: the player has more money than he knows what to do with. After filling GTA 3’s arsenal of weapons and upgrades, there wasn’t much to do with the greedy cash, as Vice City Vercetti could directly buy up businesses to build his prestige in the city. Midway through the game, you’ll have the option to purchase assets and upgrades for passive income. Spend that money on better hideouts and gear, and it will feel like a slow game map download and become the master criminal you should be.
