Pretty Baby (1978)

Pretty Baby is a 1978 historical fiction drama film directed by Louis Malle. The screenplay was written by Polly Platt. The title was inspired by the song “Pretty Baby” by Tony Jackson, which was used in the soundtrack. Although the film was mostly critically acclaimed, it was quite controversial at the time, especially for its scenes of naked teenager Brooke Shields.

After making a series of acclaimed and controversial films in his native France, director Louis Malle makes his American debut with a disturbing but visually beautiful story about Hattie (Susan Sarandon), a turn-of-the-century prostitute who, in the Storyville neighborhood of in New Orleans. When Hattie becomes pregnant, she decides to keep the baby and gives birth to a girl named Violet, who raises her in a brothel where she still works. Twelve years later, Violet (Brooke Shields) is old enough to attract the attention of brothel residents, but emotionally she has one foot stuck in the adult world of her surroundings and the other in the naivety of childhood. With Hattie’s consent, Violet’s virginity is sold to the house’s patrons; but for Violet, the gap between childhood and adulthood becomes clearest – and most heartbreaking – when she wins the sympathy of Bellocq (Keith Carradine), a photographer who has worked on a series of photographs about the Storyville prostitutes. Violet’s mix of childlike innocence and mature sensuality is extremely attractive to him, but their relationship quickly becomes problematic, especially when Hattie leaves Violet to get married.
