Meticulously crafted but also laborious and predictable, James Cameron’s 1989 close encounter epic reaffirms one of cinema’s oldest first principles: everything moves much slower underwater. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as ex-married petroleum engineers who still have some “issues” to work out, are recruited to help a Navy SEAL (Michael Biehn) in a top-secret recovery operation: a nuclear submarine is ambushed. and sunk. under mysterious circumstances, in some of the deepest waters on Earth, and petrotechs have the only submarine that can dive that far. Every image and action is minutely detailed (and the computerized aquatic creatures are beautiful), but the film’s awkward pacing is fatal. It’s the audience that ends up feeling diluted. For a guy who loves guns as much as Cameron does (after all, his next film was the body-count masterpiece Terminator 2: Judgment Day), it’s interesting that the moral balance here is heavily weighted in favor of competent engineers; the military is amoralistic ends-justify-the-means, as are weak government bureaucrats in Aliens.

This is the only true widescreen anamorphic version of The Abyss ever released, literally every other regional version has been cropped with black bars and that’s why its very low resolution, also other regional versions have cropped parts of the movie which adds another 28 minutes to the movie. .

This re-encoded version is completely uncut and, for the first time, true widescreen.

It was personally encoded by me, Carjacker of the =Uncut Special Edition= DVD.
